Supporting a Son's Pursuit of Athletic Excellence
To Dr. Arthur Solomon, an emergency-room physician at Cleveland's Hillcrest Hospital, being involved in people's lives comes naturally. When it comes to supporting his children's dreams, his love and involvement have no boundaries.
His son Ben, a 2006 Princeton University graduate, is a world-class fencer whose goal is to represent the United States in the Olympics. And though Solomon can't guarantee Ben a spot on the team, he can make sure it won't be a lack of financial support that holds him back. "Some countries in Europe and Asia pay all the expenses for their fencers," says Solomon. "In the U.S., they're pretty much on their own."
Ben now gets some funding from the New York Athletic Club, where he trains, and he earns a little money giving fencing lessons.
